A Shopify Theme That Reflects Your Brand — Not a Generic Template
Out-of-the-box Shopify themes give you 70% of what you need. The other 30% — the parts that drive conversion, brand recognition, and speed — is where theme customization pays for itself.
- Custom sections built on Shopify 2.0 — your team can edit content in the theme editor without touching code.
- Speed-safe Liquid code — we ship with a Lighthouse target of 85+ on mobile, not the 40s most themes launch with.
- Conversion-tuned PDPs and collection pages — the layouts proven on 1,000+ Shopify stores we’ve customized since 2015.
- Update-safe customization — our modifications survive theme updates because we use Shopify’s recommended override patterns, not direct edits to core files.
Our Shopify Theme Customization Process
Three phases, each with clear deliverables and your sign-off before we move forward.
Discovery & Audit
We audit your current theme, identify performance bottlenecks, review your brand assets, and map the customization scope to your business goals. You get a detailed proposal with timeline, deliverables, and fixed pricing before any work begins.
Design & Development
Our designers create custom mockups for every page template — home, PDP, collections, cart, account. You review and approve before we touch code. Then developers build the customization in a Shopify development store, using Shopify 2.0 sections and update-safe Liquid patterns.
QA, Launch & 30-Day Support
We test every flow on mobile and desktop, validate Core Web Vitals, run pre-launch SEO checks, and deploy with zero downtime. You get 30 days of post-launch support included to fix anything that comes up after going live.

Shopify Theme Customization — Frequently Asked Questions
The top 10 questions Shopify founders ask about theme customization, answered honestly.
How much does Shopify theme customization cost?
Shopify theme customization typically ranges from $4,500 for a theme-based customization to $40,000+ for a fully custom theme built from scratch. The cost depends on three factors: the scope of changes (how many sections, page templates, and custom features), whether you start with an existing theme or build from scratch, and the complexity of integrations (apps, ERPs, third-party tools). Our Theme-Based package starts at $4,500 (2–4 weeks), Semi-Custom at $9,500 (4–8 weeks), and Full Custom is quoted per project based on scope. Every package includes a fixed price after the discovery call — no surprises.
Should I customize my existing Shopify theme or build a custom theme from scratch?
For most Shopify stores under $5M in annual revenue, customizing an existing premium theme is the right call — you get 90% of a custom theme’s impact at 25% of the cost and time. Building a fully custom theme makes sense when: (1) you have specific functionality no premium theme supports, (2) your roadmap includes headless or advanced integrations, or (3) your revenue justifies the investment ($5M+). On a 30-minute call, we’ll review your store and tell you honestly which path fits.
Will customizing my Shopify theme break when Shopify pushes a theme update?
Not when we do it. The reason most theme customizations break on update is that developers edit the core theme files directly — so when Shopify pushes an update, those edits get overwritten. We use Shopify’s recommended override patterns: custom sections, blocks, and snippets that live alongside the core theme. Your customization survives theme updates because it’s technically separate from the files Shopify is updating. We also ship documentation so your team knows exactly what we changed.
Can you customize the Shopify Dawn theme (or Prestige, Impulse, Sense, Refresh)?
Yes — we’ve customized Dawn, Sense, Refresh, Craft, Prestige, Impulse, Symmetry, Warehouse, and most premium themes in the Shopify Theme Store. Dawn is the most common starting point for Shopify 2.0 customizations because it’s the lightest and most performant. Prestige and Impulse work well for fashion and luxury brands. The right theme depends on your industry, product count, and feature needs — we’ll recommend the best fit on the discovery call.
How long does a Shopify theme customization take?
Theme-Based customization: 2–4 weeks. Semi-Custom build: 4–8 weeks. Full Custom theme: 8–14 weeks. Timelines depend on scope, content readiness (do you have product photos, copy, brand assets ready?), and review turnaround. We give you a fixed timeline with milestones during the discovery call, and we’ve hit 94% of our launch dates on time over the last 11 years.
What can be customized on a Shopify theme — and what can’t?
What we can customize: every page template (home, PDP, collection, cart, checkout for Plus, account, blog), custom sections and blocks, navigation, mega menus, custom Liquid for any feature, app integrations, schema markup, mobile layouts, and animations. What’s harder: Shopify checkout (only fully customizable on Shopify Plus), core Shopify functionality like discount logic or shipping rates (these are platform-level, not theme-level). On the discovery call, we’ll tell you exactly what’s possible for your specific request.
Do I need to switch to Shopify 2.0 to customize my theme?
If you’re on a Vintage (pre-2021) theme, yes — we strongly recommend migrating to Shopify 2.0 first. Vintage themes don’t support sections on all pages, can’t use the new theme editor, miss out on speed improvements, and don’t receive feature updates from Shopify. We include the Vintage→2.0 migration as part of our Semi-Custom and Full Custom packages, with full data and SEO preservation. If you’re unsure which architecture your theme uses, send us your store URL — we’ll check in 2 minutes.
Will theme customization hurt my Shopify store’s speed or SEO?
Done right, it improves both. Most performance and SEO issues come from theme bloat, unused apps, unoptimized images, and badly written custom code — not customization itself. We ship every customization with: Lighthouse target 85+ on mobile, lazy-loaded images and below-fold content, preserved URL structure and 301 redirects where needed, schema markup intact, and a pre-launch SEO audit. Our average client sees a +38% conversion lift and a faster Core Web Vitals score after we’re done.
How do you customize a Shopify theme for mobile?
Mobile-first, not mobile-as-an-afterthought. We design every layout for mobile first, then scale up to tablet and desktop — because 70%+ of Shopify traffic is mobile. Specific mobile customizations include: sticky add-to-cart on PDPs, optimized image ratios and srcset, larger tap targets (44px minimum), simplified mega menus, mobile-specific section ordering, and reduced JS payload. We test on real iPhones and Android devices, not just Chrome DevTools.
Do I get the theme code and files after launch — can my team edit it?
Yes — 100% of the code lives in your Shopify admin. You own everything. We don’t lock you into our agency, we don’t hold your code hostage, and we ship documentation that explains exactly what we changed and how to edit it. If your team has a developer, they can take over. If not, we offer ongoing maintenance retainers but never as a requirement.
